Lake Salda, known as the “Maldives of Turkey”, has joined the “List of the 100 Most Important Geological Heritage Sites in the World” as part of a project supported by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The lake is located in the Yeşilova district of Burdur province in southwestern Turkey, and is considered a unique tourist destination for its picturesque nature, sparkling blue waters and white beach.
The Turkish authorities nominated Lake Salda in Burdur and the volcanic Nemrut Lake in Bitlis province (east) for the list, which is conducted as part of a project by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) with support from UNESCO, and is announced every two years.
The lake’s inclusion on the list was announced on Wednesday morning during a press conference held in the South Korean city of Busan as part of the 37th World Geological Congress.
