The Consulate General of Turkey in New York City at the Turkish House on Wednesday organized the “Economy and Politics Talks,” the first event of its kind with the participation of economist Nouriel Roubini.

The discussions were moderated by the Turkish Ministry of Treasury and Finance Attaché Gozde Jezmegul, where topics such as global economic developments, geopolitical tensions, inflation, interest rate expectations, trade relations between the United States and China, emerging markets, and artificial intelligence were discussed.

Turkish diplomatic sources said that Ankara supports Palestine obtaining full membership in the United Nations.

The sources said on Wednesday that Palestine must obtain the approval of the UN Security Council and the support of two-thirds of the members of the UN General Assembly for its full membership.

It indicated that Algeria will submit a draft resolution for Palestine to gain full membership during the next UN Security Council meeting.

It pointed out that the issue has not been presented to the Council until today due to expectations that the United States of America will use its veto power against the draft law.

It stated that “Washington intends to use its veto against the draft resolution that Algeria will submit.”

The sources confirmed that “recent developments show that the issue of recognizing a Palestinian state is enjoying increasing support in the international community.”

It added: “Turkey has always been one of the strongest supporters of this issue and was a pioneer in Palestine obtaining the status of an observer member by the General Assembly’s decision in 2012, and during this stage we will also support the recognition of Palestine in all our meetings.”

The American administration had indicated its intention to use its veto power if Palestine’s full membership in the United Nations was proposed.

Earlier Wednesday, the US representative to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said that she “does not believe that full membership of Palestine in the United Nations will help achieve a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.”

Palestine obtained the status of a non-member observer state at the United Nations after a resolution adopted by the General Assembly by a large majority on November 29, 2012.

Palestine applied for full membership in the United Nations in 2011, but this application did not receive the necessary support in the UN Security Council.

On April 2, the Permanent Representative of Palestine to the United Nations, Riyad Mansour, sent a letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, requesting that the membership application be reconsidered.

The Security Council will vote on Thursday on a draft resolution regarding Palestine gaining full membership in the United Nations instead of “non-member observer” status.

Obtaining full membership requires the approval of 9 member states of the Security Council (15 countries), provided that none of the five veto countries, namely the United States, Russia, France, Britain, and China, object.

If the Council approves, the membership application will be referred to the General Assembly, and it must obtain two-thirds of the votes of the Assembly, which is composed of 193 countries, 139 of which recognize the State of Palestine.

A protest was organized in front of the US Consulate General in the Sariyer district of Istanbul on Sunday, denouncing Washington’s support for the Israeli attacks on the Palestinian Gaza Strip.

The protest, organized by the Gaza Solidarity Platform of the Association for Free Thought and Educational Rights (Ozgür-Der), began after noon prayer.

The protesters raised Palestinian flags and chanted slogans and chants against Israel and the United States of America.

In front of the American Consulate, the protesters recited verses from the Holy Quran and expressed their full solidarity with the people of Gaza.

In his speech, Hamza Aar, a member of the Gaza Solidarity Platform, called on the Islamic world to take a united position and express full solidarity with the residents of Gaza.

The ongoing war on Gaza since October 7, 2023 has left tens of thousands of civilian victims, most of them children and women, and a famine that has claimed the lives of children and the elderly, according to Palestinian and international data, which led to Israel being brought before the International Court of Justice on charges of committing “genocide.”

The Turkish Foreign Ministry said on Monday that the scenes coming from the Palestinian Shifa Hospital in the Gaza Strip are evidence that Israel wants to deliberately and systematically eliminate the Palestinian people.

The Turkish Ministry added in a statement that Israel’s crimes during the past six months are among the most horrific atrocities in human history.

It stressed that the perpetrators of these crimes will be tried for their crimes, and history will record those who turned a blind eye to these crimes in its black pages.

It stressed that it is the duty of the international community to stop Israel, which ignores human conscience and law and harms global peace and stability.

It also stressed the need to take the necessary measures without delay to ensure the implementation of the recent ceasefire resolution adopted by the UN Security Council and the additional measures announced by the International Court of Justice.

Earlier Monday, the Israeli army withdrew completely from within the Al-Shifa Medical Complex and its surrounding areas, leaving behind massive destruction and a humanitarian catastrophe that it committed over a period of 14 days, in addition to burning and destroying the complex’s buildings and most of the homes surrounding it.

Israel continues the war despite the issuance of a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire during Ramadan and despite its appearance before the International Court of Justice on charges of committing “genocide.”

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza with American support, leaving tens of thousands of civilian casualties, most of them children and women, and massive destruction and famine that claimed the lives of dozens of children, according to Palestinian and UN data.

Mrs. Emine Erdogan, wife of the Turkish President, celebrated “World Zero Waste Day” on Saturday.

Through her account on the “X” platform, the First Lady published a video message on the occasion of World Zero Waste Day, corresponding to March 30.

In her post, the wife of the Turkish President pointed out her participation via a video message in an event at the United Nations on this occasion.

She added: “I congratulate all the environmental volunteers who are giving their time and effort to make our common home, the world, a more livable place on the occasion of World Zero Waste Day.”

She added: “I wish for a prosperous world in which resources are used optimally, waste is reduced to a minimum, and sustainability prevails.”

The video published by Mrs. Erdogan included excerpts from her video message to the United Nations event.

On the other hand, UN Secretary-General António Guterres praised First Lady Erdogan’s efforts on “zero waste” in a video message he sent to the event held at the UN headquarters in New York.

Guterres thanked Ms. Emine Erdogan for her “visionary leadership” on an important issue such as zero waste.

Turkey launched the Zero Waste Project in 2017, at the initiative of Emine Erdogan, with the aim of combating the impact of waste and waste on the environment, changing people’s consumption habits, and dealing with that waste by recycling it and making use of it after separating it according to its types at the source, with the aim of achieving a recycling rate of up to 60% in 2030.

In mid-December 2022, the United Nations approved the “Zero Waste” project resolution submitted by Turkey within the framework of plans for sustainable development and combating climate change.

The United Nations General Assembly unanimously approved the resolution, which was mainly submitted by Turkey and jointly submitted by 105 countries.

With this resolution, the United Nations General Assembly declared March 30 as World Zero Waste Day.

The Turkish Ministry of Commerce on Wednesday categorically denied what was recently reported in the media about allegations that Turkey exports weapons and ammunition to Israel.

The Ministry stressed in a statement that these allegations are “unfounded,” stressing that “the export of weapons or ammunition from Turkey to Israel cannot be permitted in any way.”

It added, “The phrases contained in the titles of the sections of the customs tariff schedule are being deliberately manipulated and transmitted to the media, and the news published in this regard is tendentious and fabricated.”

It added: “There are no military activities between our country and Israel, including military training and exercises or cooperation in the field of defense industries.”

The Ministry stressed that Turkey continues to stand by Palestine and the Palestinian cause and continues to support it.

It added that Turkey will continue to strive to provide all forms of assistance and support to the Palestinians in Gaza and through all channels.

It expressed its expectation that the ceasefire resolution issued by the UN Security Council would be implemented as soon as possible.

On Monday, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution supported by 14 countries (out of 15) calling for an “immediate” ceasefire in Gaza during the month of Ramadan, leading to a “permanent and sustainable” ceasefire, while the United States abstained from voting.

The Ministry previously confirmed on Wednesday that the allegations published by foreign websites about arms trade with Israel were incorrect, describing them as “aimed at misleading public opinion.”

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Wednesday that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is a major player who is respected in the region and the entire world.

This came in a press conference held in Poland, in which he participated via video conference technology.

Kuleba added, “We do not reject the intervention of any country that wishes to contribute to ending the war between us and Russia.”

He expressed his country’s desire for everyone, including China, Turkey and other countries, to participate in the peace summit scheduled to be held to end the war.

Kuleba continued, saying: “So far, Turkey is the only country capable of talking to the Russian and Ukrainian sides.”

He added, “We are now focusing on holding a peace summit that will bring everyone together and discuss outstanding issues such as nuclear security, freedom of navigation, commercial navigation, and the exchange of prisoners, which no one can oppose.”

Kuleba refused to accuse his country of involvement in the terrorist attack that occurred in the Russian capital last Friday.

He explained that Russia is doing everything it can to distort Ukraine’s image.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Russian authorities announced that the death toll from the terrorist attack that took place in a concert hall in Crocus City in the capital, Moscow, had risen to 140 dead and 360 injured.

Russia witnessed a national mourning on Sunday for the victims of the terrorist attack, and flags were flown at half-mast, while Moscow residents placed flower bouquets in the Crocus Hall, where gunmen opened fire.

The Federal Security Service reported in a statement on Monday the arrest of 11 people, including 4 terrorists directly involved in the attack, and that efforts are continuing to identify their accomplices.

On Tuesday, the head of the Federal Security Service, Alexander Bortnikov, accused the United States, Britain, and Ukraine of being behind the attack, but the terrorist organization ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack on Friday.

Spot gold prices jumped on Thursday to a new record high above $2,230 per ounce, driven by statements from the US Federal Reserve about an imminent cut in interest rates.

On Wednesday, US Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said that the Open Market Committee team believes that it will lower interest rates on three occasions later this year.

He stated that lowering interest rates would remain strongly on the table despite the rise in the consumer price index in February to 3.2 percent, up from 3.1 percent in the previous January.

By 08:22 (GMT), spot gold contract prices rose by 1.1 percent, or $31, to $2,230.5 per ounce.

Wall Street analysts expect gold prices to break the $2,300 per ounce barrier later this year due to increased demand, especially from central banks.

At yesterday’s meeting, the Federal Reserve’s Open Market Committee kept interest rates unchanged at a range of 5.25 percent – 5.5 percent and maintained expectations of reducing borrowing costs three times this year.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday that the hypocrisy of Western countries that support Israel with ammunition so that it can commit its massacres has turned Gaza into the largest cemetery for children and women in the world.

This came in a speech during his participation in the “Old Friends Iftar” event in Istanbul.

President Erdogan explained that “Turkey is defending its brothers in Gaza with all its capabilities, and lies and attempts at misinformation cannot cover up this fact.”

He added, “International institutions and organizations failed again in Gaza, and we must admit that the Islamic world did not pass this test well.”

President Erdogan pointed out that “Israel is not alone. It is an equation made up of dozens of supporters behind it.”

He added, “We admire the minds and consciences of those who believe that Israel is just a country on its own. But the truth is that Israel also represents a completely different equation with the United States, Britain, Germany, France, and dozens of other supporters behind it.”

Erdogan stressed that Muslims welcomed the holy month of Ramadan this year with a heavy heart because of what is happening in the Gaza Strip and the occupied Palestinian territories.

He added: “Gaza is witnessing one of the most horrific operations of genocide, as nearly 40,000 of our brothers were martyred, most of them children and women, 73,000 others were injured, and more than 7,000 innocent people are still languishing under the rubble.”

He continued: “Many efforts were made, and many initiatives were taken by international institutions. But all these diplomatic efforts did not have the expected effect in confronting Israel’s corruption, arrogance, and lawlessness.”

Erdogan expressed his belief that the sooner the Islamic world carries out self-criticism publicly, the better it will be for the Palestinian people and the entire Islamic nation.

He stressed that the humanitarian aid sent by Turkey to Gaza, which exceeded 40 thousand tons, will continue.

He added: “Just as Turkey embraced its neighbors during the Iran-Iraq war, and just as it did not turn its back on any of its brothers from the Caucasus and the Crimean Peninsula, today it supports its brothers in Gaza by all means.”

The TCG Uluçalireis submarine is preparing to receive visitors after being refurbished and transformed into a museum at sea, the first of its kind in Turkey.

The submarine, which is 94 meters long and 8.5 meters wide, is scheduled to receive visitors in the waters of the northwestern province of Çanakkale next Monday.

The submarine was American-made and went to sea in 1944 under the name “USS Thornback,” and participated in World War II before joining the Turkish Navy.

The submarine joined the Turkish Navy in 1971 and took the name “TCG Uluçalireis” and participated in the military “peace operation” carried out by Turkey on the island of Cyprus in 1974.

The submarine, which was decommissioned in 2000, was converted into a “museum” after comprehensive maintenance and renovation works, and will receive its visitors at sea at the “Çanakkale Marine Museum”.

In a press statement, Colonel Serhan Aras, commander of the Çanakkale Marine Museum, said that the submarine, which was built in the United States in 1944, is a very majestic naval vehicle.

It pointed out that the submarine underwent maintenance and renovation work that took about a year to transform it into a museum at sea, the first of its kind in Turkey.

It stated that the submarine will open its doors to visitors in the waters of Çanakkale next Monday, March 18, coinciding with the celebrations commemorating the naval victory in the battles of Çanakkale in 1915.

On March 18 of each year, Turkey commemorates the anniversary of the victory of the Ottoman Empire in the battles of Çanakkale in 1915 against the Allies, where British, French, New Zealand and Australian forces attempted to occupy Istanbul, the capital of the Ottoman Empire at that time, but the attempt failed.

The battle that took place in the Gallipoli area in Çanakkale was a turning point in the interest of the Turks, as they were victorious over the allied forces during World War I.
