The US State Department said on Tuesday that Turkey is an important country in diversifying European countries’ energy resources and reducing their dependence on Russia.

In his daily press conference, US State Department Deputy Spokesman Vedant Patel touched on Turkey’s talks with the American energy company ExxonMobil.

Patel noted that he would not comment on the ongoing trade talks, but stressed that Washington encourages all countries in the region to diversify energy resources and reduce their dependence on Russia.

He added, “Turkey, as the host country of the Southern Gas Corridor, plays a very important role in diversifying energy supplies in Europe and achieving independence from Russia.”

He stated that Ankara took steps to diversify its resources of liquefied natural gas during the war in Ukraine.

Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar announced talks with ExxonMobil to purchase 2.5 million tons of liquefied natural gas worth about $1.1 billion.

According to the statement of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Minister Bayraktar confirmed in an interview with the British newspaper the Financial Times that Turkey has taken various steps to increase its independence in the field of energy.

He pointed out that Turkey imports almost all of its natural gas needs and that it aims to create a new supply portfolio without relying on a single supplier.

Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar said that his country plans to become self-sufficient in the field of energy during the next three decades, announcing that oil production in mountain Gabar (east) has exceeded 30 thousand barrels per day.

The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources stated in a statement that Bayraktar held a meeting with a group of Turkish youth in the capital, Ankara, in which he answered their inquiries about topics related to the country’s work in the field of energy.

According to the statement, Bayraktar explained that one of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s goals for the “Century of Turkey” is energy independence.

He added: “Therefore, we have a definitive goal in energy, which is to make Turkey completely independent (self-sufficient) in the field of energy and save it from the import problem in the ‘Turkey Century,’ and we hope to achieve this within the next thirty years.”

The “Century of Turkey” is a vision announced by President Erdogan in late 2022, which includes the programs and goals of the Republic in its second centenary.

Bayraktar stressed that independence in the field of energy means Turkey’s independence, and that Turkey’s security in this field is an issue equivalent to Turkey’s national security.

He pointed to President Erdogan’s announcement of the discovery of a natural gas field off the coast of the Black Sea in August 2020, which is the largest in the country’s history, with a volume of gas that may meet between 25 to 30 percent of Turkey’s needs.

In late 2022, Turkey announced the discovery of an additional 170 billion cubic meters of natural gas in the Black Sea, bringing the total volume of discoveries to 710 billion cubic meters.

The Turkish Minister also referred in the context to the discovery of an oil reserve in the state of Şırnak (east) in May 2023.

He said: “We found crude oil in mountain Gabar and are extracting oil from the region. The daily production extracted from Gabar has exceeded 30 thousand barrels.”

Last May, President Erdogan announced the discovery of an oil discovery with a production capacity of 100,000 barrels per day in the state of Şırnak.

He added at the time: “I would like to announce new good news. We have discovered an oil field with a production capacity of up to 100,000 barrels per day in Gora Gabar.”

According to monitoring data from Turkey’s Mediterranean Program for the years 2024-2026, Turkey’s energy imports rose to a record level, recording $96.5 billion in 2022, accompanied by the impact of the sanctions imposed on Russia as a result of the Russian-Ukrainian war, which caused commodity prices to rise in the aforementioned year.

However, the decline in energy prices during the current year 2023, according to the same data in September of this year due to the increase in gas reserves in Europe and weak demand for it in China, Turkey’s energy imports decreased by 26.2 percent in the period from January to July. 2023 compared to the same period last year, declining to $41 billion.

In parallel, estimates based on data indicate that Turkey’s energy imports will decrease by 26.4 percent in 2023 compared to 2022 and decline to $71 billion.

It is expected that these imports will reach $77.3 billion in 2024 and $76.3 billion in 2025.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that his country and European countries are interested in the project of establishing an electronic platform for natural gas trade in Turkey.

Putin explained in a press statement on Wednesday that the natural gas center to be established in Turkey has received great interest from Azerbaijan.

He pointed out that it is possible that other countries will join the project as work progresses on it, saying: “Our Turkish friends, we and everyone who wants to obtain Russian resources in Europe are interested in this project.”

He stated that they are continuing to deliver natural gas effectively to Turkey through the “Turkish Torrent” and “Blue Stream” projects, and that the infrastructure can be expanded in the future.

Last September, the idea of the natural gas center project to be established in Turkey was accelerated during the meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in the city of Sochi.

Turkey has an important natural gas infrastructure through the Blue Stream (through the Black Sea), Turkish Stream and TANAP pipelines (to transport Azerbaijani gas to Europe via Anatolia).

Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar announced that the Iraqi-Turkish oil pipeline, which was damaged by the February 6 earthquake, is ready and will resume work this week.

This came during his speech at the opening session of the “Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC) 2023,” held in the capital of the United Arab Emirates on Monday.

Bayraktar explained that Turkey has long been a reliable route for oil and natural gas, noting that two million barrels of oil pass daily through the Turkish straits currently.

He added that the Iraqi-Turkish oil pipeline, which has been active for about 45 years, has a daily capacity of 500,000 barrels of oil.

He pointed out that once the Iraqi-Turkish pipeline is operational, it will be possible to supply 500,000 barrels of oil to global markets.

Bayraktar stated that Turkey ships large quantities of gas to Europe through the Trans-Anatolian Natural Gas Pipeline (TANAP).

He continued, “We currently send gas to Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova via the Western Balkans pipeline. We have become a natural gas hub.”

Bayraktar explained that Turkey, which aims to reduce its dependence on abroad in the field of energy, is focusing on investments in oil, gas and renewable energy and believes that nuclear energy investments are an important tool for reducing carbon emissions.

Minister Bayraktar is expected to meet with government officials in the UAE and senior executives of the world’s leading energy companies on the sidelines of the exhibition.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stressed on Monday the importance of the “Igdir-Nakhchivan” gas pipeline project in terms of strengthening his country’s partnership with Azerbaijan and contributing to the security of energy supplies in Europe.

This came in a press conference held with his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev following the laying of the foundation stone for the Igdir-Nakhchivan gas pipeline and the signing ceremony of a number of agreements in the Supreme Council (Parliament) of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan.

Erdogan indicated that he proudly sees the development that Nakhchivan has witnessed since his last visit to it in 2008, stressing that the relations between Turkey and Azerbaijan are unparalleled in the world.

He stressed that they are continuing their efforts to strengthen relations and cooperation between the two countries in all fields under the slogan “One People, Two States.”

He pointed out that Nakhchivan has great potential in terms of economy, transportation and power lines, adding: “With the establishment of regional transmission lines, we will have the opportunity to fully activate this potential.”

He added: “The importance of the international Middle Corridor between East and West has been better understood as a result of the Corona epidemic and the wars in our region, and on this occasion, the Igdir-Nakhchivan gas pipeline will strengthen our partnership with Azerbaijan in the field of energy and will also contribute to the security of energy supplies in Europe.”

He pointed out that the two sides signed today the Kars-Nakhchivan railway project, in addition to agreements in the fields of collective housing and electric energy.

He also stated that, following the press conference, they will open the military maintenance factory that Turkey renovated, indicating that the project will contribute greatly to cooperation between the two sides in defense industries.

President Erdogan touched on the operation carried out by Azerbaijan against terrorism in the Karabakh region recently, explaining that Baku was forced to carry out the operation on its sovereign territory.

He noted that “the completion of the operation in a short time while showing the utmost concern for the rights of civilians is a source of pride.”

He said: “I pray to God for mercy for our brothers who were martyred during the operation, and I condole their relatives and wish a speedy recovery for the injured.”

He added: “I wholeheartedly congratulate the victorious Azerbaijani army for its historic success and humanitarian stance towards civilians.”

He continued: “With the recent victory (the operation against terrorism in Karabakh), new windows of opportunity have opened for comprehensive normalization in the region,” stressing the importance of exploiting this opportunity.

President Erdogan called on Armenia to shake the hand of peace extended to it and take sincere steps to bring peace to the region.

On September 19, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense announced in a statement the launch of an anti-terrorism operation “with the aim of establishing constitutional order in the Karabakh region.”

One day later, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry announced that representatives of the Armenian population in Karabakh had submitted a request through the Russian peacekeeping forces stationed in the region, according to which an agreement was reached for Baku to stop its operation against terrorism in the region and abandon the illegal Armenian armed groups and the Armenian armed forces present in Karabakh. To give up its weapons and evacuate its military sites.

On September 27, 2020, the Azerbaijani army launched an operation to liberate its occupied territories in Karabakh, and after fierce battles that lasted 44 days, Azerbaijan and Armenia reached a Russian-brokered ceasefire agreement stipulating that Baku would regain control over its occupied territories.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reaffirmed the necessity of carrying out radical reforms in the structure of the United Nations.

This came in a statement he made to reporters at the conclusion of his visit to the American state of New York to participate in the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Erdogan said: “If the United Nations is not able to carry out reforms and adapt itself to the spirit of the times, it will not be able to accomplish the peacekeeping mission, and the war between Russia and Ukraine is the best example of this.”

He explained that Turkey’s calls to reform the structure of the United Nations and the UN Security Council are accepted by many countries around the world.

He pointed out that the international order established according to the international conditions of World War II has now clearly demonstrated its inadequacy at the present time.

The Turkish President stressed that the United Nations Security Council is a platform where confrontations are discussed, not peace.

He continued: “The United Nations becomes ineffective when its Security Council members become actors in the war.”

On the other hand, Erdogan pointed to the export of 33 million tons of grain thanks to the Trans-Black Sea Grain Initiative concluded with Turkish and international mediation.

In response to a question about relations with Moscow, Erdogan said: “We will continue our relations with Russia in a positive way. Because the issue that concerns us a lot is that we care about the Thrace region being a center for natural gas.”

He pointed out that Turkey currently imports about half of its natural gas needs from Russia and can increase the amount.
