The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) extended a hand of friendship and assistance to many countries around the world during the year 2023, through 1,326 projects and events in various fields.

TIKA, which was founded in 1992, has so far implemented more than 30,000 projects and events, 93 percent of which were after 2002.

Through these projects and events, the Turkish hand of friendship extended to the world from Palestine to Arakan, from Bosnia and Herzegovina to South Africa, from Mongolia to Latin America.

TIKA projects have contributed to strengthening Turkey’s presence in the field of global cooperation, as the number of countries in which it is active has reached 170 by 2023.

During the past year, 3,200 foreign experts benefited from the educational courses held by TIKA in various fields, while this number has approached 50,000 foreign experts since 2002.

TIKA was present in many natural disasters that occurred in 2023, in order to alleviate the victims, such as the earthquakes in Afghanistan and Pakistan and the floods in Libya and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In his speech, the president of TIKA said that they continue to implement projects in various fields around the world in line with the vision of the “Century of Turkey.”

He added that the Turkish agency contributes a major role to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for 2030.

He stated that TIKA has completed the restoration of 140 archaeological monuments in 40 countries over the past 20 years, while restoration work on 6 projects is currently ongoing.

Regarding Palestine, Kayalar explained that they implemented nearly 1,100 projects in Palestine, in addition to conducting many campaigns to distribute humanitarian aid.

China said on Wednesday that the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip will be the “focus of its attention” during its term as president of the UN Security Council.

Earlier today, China assumed the presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of November.

China’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Zhang Jun, said in a press conference, “The conflict in Gaza will be a focal point during the Council’s upcoming work.”

Zhang added, “The Council has been focusing on this issue for a few weeks, and it will remain the focus of the Council’s work, especially during the Chinese presidency.”

Hamza Taşdelen, Deputy Head of the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Department (AFAD), described on Saturday the effects of the flood disaster in Libya as similar to an earthquake.

Taşdelen said, “The situation on the ground is very bad. The destruction in homes is similar to what an earthquake leaves behind.”

Regarding the tasks carried out by AFAD crews, he explained that they divided the affected areas based on their priorities of finding survivors or besieged people.

The number of the AFAD crew, according to Taşdelen, was 168 people who arrived on three cargo planes, including underwater and above-water search crews.

He pointed out that they were among the first rescue crews and that the teams coming from other countries later coordinated with the Turkish team in order to distribute their operations.

Taşdelen also pointed out the arrival of Turkish humanitarian aid ships to the Libyan shores, which they will supervise its distribution.

The United Nations announced Thursday that it would provide $10 million to support relief efforts following the devastating floods in Libya that claimed the lives of thousands.

This came in a statement by the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths.

“$10 million has been immediately released from the UN Emergency Fund and there is (another) appeal for additional support,” Griffiths said.

The UN official described the Libya floods as “shocking and tragic.”

“Getting life-saving supplies to people, preventing a secondary health crisis and quickly restoring a semblance of normalcy should outweigh any other concern at this difficult time in Libya,” Griffiths said.

He praised the efforts of Libya’s neighbors and other countries that sent supplies and search and rescue teams.

On Wednesday, the United Nations launched a donation campaign entitled “Response to the Libya Floods” to raise $10 million, which it will allocate to help those affected by the floods in Libya.

The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) announced on Monday the preparation of humanitarian aid to be sent to Libya, in the wake of a hurricane that hit its eastern cities.

AFAD mentioned in a post on the X platform that Libyan cities witnessed floods due to heavy rains.

It explained that in response to an international distress call launched by the Libyan government, AFAD is preparing to send urgent humanitarian aid to Libya.

It added that the aid includes a rescue team of 150 personnel, tents and their supplies, two rescue cars, 4 boats, an electricity generator and other supplies.

AFAD expressed its deep condolences to the friendly and brotherly Libyan people, wishing mercy for the victims and speedy recovery for the injured.

On Sunday, the Mediterranean hurricane “Daniel” swept several regions in eastern Libya, most notably the cities of Benghazi, Al-Bayda and Al-Marj, in addition to Sousse and Derna.

The hurricane left more than two thousand dead, according to the latest official toll on Monday.

The value of projects undertaken by the Turkish contracting sector outside the country during the first seven months of this year amounted to 8 billion and 933 million dollars.

According to data from the Turkish Ministry of Trade, the contracting sector undertook 120 projects outside the country during the first seven months of 2023.

It showed that the Turkish contracting sector undertook 11,768 projects in 134 countries, at a value of $482 billion, from 1972 until the end of last July.

During the aforementioned years, Russia ranked first in the number of projects undertaken by Turkish contracting companies outside the country, followed by Turkmenistan, Iraq, Libya and Kazakhstan.

Russia’s share of the total projects amounted to 20.3 percent with a value of $97.9 billion, Turkmenistan 10.6 percent with a value of $50.8 billion, and Iraq 6.9 percent with a value of $33.2 billion.

The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency “AFAD” delivered food aid to the Chadian authorities for Sudanese refugees fleeing the war.

And AFAD said in a statement on Friday that it had dispatched two of its representatives to Chad on July 20 to manage humanitarian aid for Sudanese refugees there.

The statement confirmed that AFAD delegates in Chad handed over 1,000 food parcels to the authorities Thursday, including the basic needs of rice, oil, sugar and pasta.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan presented the first Turkish astronauts as part of a mission to the International Space Station at the end of 2023.

This came during his visit to the Technofest Festival for Aviation and Space Technology, which kicked off on Thursday in Istanbul.

In his speech, he mentioned that Ankara announced two years ago the goals of the Turkish space program, which will move it to the ranks of the leading countries in the global space race during 2021.

He stressed that his country is taking another important step today towards achieving the goals.

Erdogan explained that the first Turkish astronaut will carry out his mission at the International Space Station for 14 days.

He indicated that the reserve astronaut will enhance his training through a sub-orbital flight.

He continued, “It is scheduled that the date of our astronaut’s launch into space will be in the last quarter of 2023.”

And he indicated that “Alber Guzer Oji”, who will launch to the International Space Station, is “a heroic pilot who achieved important successes in leading the Turkish Armed Forces.”

As for the reserve astronaut, “Tova Cihangir Atasefer,” Erdogan explained that he is a systems engineer working in the field of space launch systems in the Turkish company “Roketsan” for defense industries.

The president continued, “In this mission, the astronaut will carry out 13 different experiments prepared by universities and valuable research institutions in Turkey.”

And he indicated that he sees the future in the Technofest festival for astronauts, inventors, pilots, engineers and physicists.

Erdogan expressed his happiness at being with the participants in Technofest, which he described as the number one festival in the world for aviation and space technology.

He thanked his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev, his wife, Mihriban Aliyeva, and the Libyan Prime Minister, Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, for their participation in the festival.

He pointed to the great turnout for participation in the festival, which was held for the first time in 2018.

Erdogan explained that the number of requests to participate in the festival during 2018 was 4,333.

And he added, “We received requests from one million people among 333,000 teams from 81 Turkish states and 96 countries to participate in this year’s Technofest Festival.”

He revealed that the value of the prizes and support that the festival monitored amounted to 44 million Turkish liras (one dollar equals about 19.4 liras), after it was 4 million Turkish liras in 2018.

And he indicated that he met young people interested in technology, defense industries, and science during the Technofest Festival, which turned into a brand.

Erdogan thanked the Turkish technology team, ministries and all institutions for their efforts in organizing the festival.

On Thursday, the activities of the seventh edition of the Technofest Festival, which is the largest of its kind in the world, kicked off on the grounds of Ataturk Airport, under the supervision of the “Turkish Technology Team Endowment” and in cooperation with the Ministry of Industry and Technology.

Technofist is an important way in Turkey to discover the talents of the participating youth to showcase their technological innovations such as missiles and robots, with the support of government institutions.
