The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed on Sunday its concern about some countries halting their aid to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

The Turkish Foreign Ministry explained in a statement that UNRWA meets the vital needs of millions of Palestinian refugees under very difficult circumstances.

The statement added that more than 150 UNRWA employees have been killed by Israeli forces in Gaza since October 7.

He pointed out that stopping (some countries) providing aid to UNRWA due to some allegations that affected a small number of members of this organization would harm “the Palestinian people in the first place.”

The Turkish Foreign Ministry expressed its hope that the countries that announced the cessation of aid to UNRWA would reconsider their decision.

Since Friday, the United States, Canada, Australia, Italy, Britain, Finland, Germany and the Netherlands have “temporarily” suspended funding for the UN agency following Israeli allegations that 12 of its employees participated in the Hamas attack on October 7.

The Israeli accusations affected 12 employees out of more than 30,000 male and female employees, most of whom are Palestinian refugees themselves working for UNRWA, in addition to a small number of international employees.

These accusations are not the first of their kind. Since the beginning of the war on Gaza, Israel has accused UNRWA employees of working for Hamas.

This was considered a “pre-justification” for attacking the institution’s schools and facilities in the Gaza Strip, which houses tens of thousands of displaced people, most of whom are children and women, according to observers.

The Western announcements came hours after the International Court of Justice in The Hague announced its rejection of Israel’s demands to drop the “genocide” lawsuit in Gaza.

Which was filed against it by South Africa and it temporarily ruled to oblige Tel Aviv “to take measures to stop the genocide and bring in humanitarian aid.” UNRWA said on Friday that it had opened an investigation into allegations of the involvement of a number (without specifying) of its employees in the October 7 attacks.

UNRWA was established by a resolution of the United Nations General Assembly in 1949, and was authorized to provide assistance and protection to refugees in its five areas of operations:

Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip, until a just solution to their problem is reached.

On October 7, Hamas launched an attack on Israeli military points and settlements around the Gaza Strip, during which it killed about 1,200 Israelis.

It wounded about 5,431 and captured at least 239, exchanging dozens of them with Israel during a temporary humanitarian truce that lasted 7 days and ended in early December 2023.

Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli army has been waging a devastating war on Gaza that, as of Sunday, has left 26,422 martyrs and 65,87 injured, most of them children and women, according to the Palestinian authorities, and has caused “massive destruction and an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe,” according to the United Nations.

On Sunday, the Greek Cypriot administration appealed to the countries of the region to combat a fire that broke out again in a forest near the village of Alasa, Limassol district.

According to news circulating in the Romanian media, a fire broke out again in a forest near the village of Alasa, which broke out on Thursday and was extinguished.

Operations are continuing by land and air to extinguish the fire, which has expanded due to the wind and is now threatening nearby residential areas.

Government spokesman Konstantinos Limpiotis said that the Foreign Ministry had contacted Israel, Lebanon, Egypt and Greece to request help.

He pointed out that the 3 helicopters that Jordan sent to the region are actively participating in fighting the fire.

He stated that investigations are underway into the reasons for the renewed outbreak of the fire after it was extinguished.

It is noteworthy that the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, mediated by the United Nations, after the outbreak of the fire on Friday, August 5, offered assistance to the administration of southern Greek Cyprus, which expressed its thanks to the Turkish side and indicated that there was no need for assistance because the fire had been extinguished.

On Monday, a Turkish research vessel concluded a second round of work in conducting a survey of fish stocks in Lebanese territorial waters.

The work of the “Mediterranean Research 1” ship of the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry lasted 15 days as part of cooperation between the Lebanese government and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) with a team of Lebanese experts.

Lebanese Minister of Agriculture Abbas Hajj Hassan expressed “thanks to the Turkish government and the ship’s team for this assistance, as Turkey is the main partner with FAO, the Lebanese National Council for Scientific Research and the Lebanese government represented by the Ministry of Agriculture.”

He stressed “the importance of this day for all the Lebanese, and specifically for the fishermen, as it establishes a real maritime work in fishing so that this sector becomes promising by drawing the possibilities that exist in the Lebanese sea.”

Since 2019, the Lebanese have been experiencing an unprecedented severe economic crisis that has led to a record collapse in the value of the local currency against the dollar, as well as a shortage of fuel and medicine, and a sharp decline in the purchasing power of citizens.

Hajj Hassan stated that his country “aspires to a partnership with advanced countries in the field of marine fishing, led by Turkey.”

He revealed a “memorandum of understanding between the two governments will be signed soon in this field.”

He praised “the very important Turkish experiences, especially with regard to the marine world and animal production.”

As for the captain of the Turkish ship, Ali Osbulat, he said, “The ship started working in the Lebanese territorial waters on the third of this month by surveying an area of about 650 miles from the coast of Tripoli in northern Lebanon to the city of Sidon in the south.”

While the Turkish researcher on board the ship, Coşkun Menderes Aydin, said: “We are in Lebanon for the second time to conduct environmental investigations about the appropriate places for fishing on the Lebanese coast in cooperation with FAO and the Lebanese government to make comparisons with other regions of the Mediterranean.”

He explained that “the team on board the ship collects two types of data, the first on the types and density of fish, and the second on the biology of the fish.”

He continued, “The data is quickly verified on board the ship as soon as it is collected after fishing operations carried out by the team, in addition to other operations implemented by the Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture, in order to integrate the data later and issue studies on the existing ecosystem.”

The Turkish Coast Guard Command said in a statement on Tuesday that its teams rushed to rescue migrants after receiving a report at midnight last night that a group of migrants were on life rafts off the beaches of Marmaris in the southwestern state of Mugla.

It indicated that it sent two boats to the site, and the teams were able to rescue 66 migrants who were on board 3 life rafts.

She pointed out that a helicopter, a plane and an additional boat were sent after the migrants were informed that the number of rafts the Greek side had placed them in was 4.

The teams were able to find the fourth buoy, which was almost submerged, and were able to rescue 7 other migrants and reach the bodies of 6 people, including two infants, a woman and 3 children.

After informing the migrants who were part of the semi-submerged raft that their number was 18, the teams began searching for 5 other migrants, including two infants, and the search is still going on for the missing.

The migrants reported that they set out from Lebanon on September 10 on a 15-meter wooden boat with the aim of reaching Italy.

They noted that they had sought help from the Greek coast guard after they ran out of fuel off the island of Rhodes on Monday.

They pointed out that the Greek coast guard transferred them to a boat and took their valuables from them, then put them on 4 life rafts and left them at a point near the Turkish territorial waters to drift into the sea.

Between the end of March and the beginning of April 2022, Turkey sent aid to Lebanon via 3 ships called the “charity of charity”.

For more than two years, Lebanon has been under the weight of a severe economic crisis, which the World Bank classified as one of the 3 most severe crises in the world.
