Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Donmez announced the conclusion of an agreement with the Sultanate of Oman to import 1.4 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually for a period of 10 years.

This came in a speech he delivered on Monday during his participation in the “Turkey’s Century in Energy Summit” organized by the “Albayrak Media Group” in Istanbul.

Donmez pointed out that a delegation from the Turkish state energy company “Botas” is currently visiting the Sultanate of Oman to sign the agreement.

He explained that Turkey will import 1.4 billion cubic meters of gas annually from Oman under the 10-year agreement, which can be extended if the conditions are also suitable in the future.

He added, “At a time when the world, especially Europe, is suffering from a shortage of gas supplies, Turkey is taking all steps to become a center for gas trade.”

He pointed out that the ministry has been conducting intensive diplomacy in the field of energy to make Turkey a center for gas trade for a long time, and explained that they visited 15 countries in Europe, Central Asia and the Gulf region last year.

He pointed out that the agreement to supply gas from Turkey to Bulgaria represents the first concrete step in this context, as Turkey will supply Bulgaria with 1.5 billion cubic meters of gas annually until 2035.

He explained that this capacity is equivalent to about 30 percent of Bulgaria’s annual gas consumption, adding, “Within 13 years, there will be a total gas flow of 20 billion cubic meters to Bulgaria.”

According to Minister Donmez, “In addition to Bulgaria, we are taking similar steps with North Macedonia, Romania and Moldova.”

He noted that his ministry’s next goal is to host meetings between gas-producing and consuming countries and to make Turkey a center where the reference price for gas in the region is determined.

He pointed out that the Istanbul Gas Summit will be held on February 14-15 in this context, indicating that it will bring together the producing countries in the Middle East, the Mediterranean, the Caspian Sea and Central Asia with the consuming countries in Europe.

He pointed out that the summit will be held under the slogan “Securing the Future Together” and will be attended by energy ministers and high-level representatives from public institutions, the private sector and international energy organizations.

He pointed out that the effects of global developments on the energy sector, changes in supply and demand, pricing and global supply security will be discussed.
