Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that his country was at the forefront of countries that passed the test of dealing with what is happening in the Gaza Strip.

This came in a speech on Monday during his participation via video conference technology in the opening ceremony of archaeological monuments whose restoration had been completed inside Turkey.

Erdogan added, “Turkey is the first in the world to send aid to Gaza, with a total of 50,000 tons.”

He stated that as part of the aid provided to Gaza, an eighth ship carrying 125,000 food parcels was sent to Gaza at the end of March.

He continued: “We are constantly working to increase pressure at the diplomatic and commercial levels in order to force the Israeli government, which has been excessive in killing, to cease fire.”

He added: “In the first stage, we imposed restrictions on the export of 54 products, and as of last week we stopped export and import transactions with Israel for all products.”

Erdogan explained that Turkey also decided to intervene in the genocide case filed against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

He continued: “We will use all our resources to ensure that those who killed 35,000 of our brothers, including 15,000 children, are held accountable before the law. I believe that our insistence will encourage other countries that want to stop the bloodshed in the region.”

Erdogan stressed that the Turkish people, who came to help the Palestinian people in their most difficult days, not only fulfill the duty of brotherhood, but also reflect the conscience of humanity.

Since October 7, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza, leaving tens of thousands dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and massive destruction and famine that claimed the lives of children and the elderly.

Israel continues its war despite the issuance of an immediate ceasefire resolution by the Security Council, and despite its appearance before the International Court of Justice on charges of committing “genocide.”

Turkish Trade Minister Ömer Bolat announced on Saturday that his country had raised the quota of Palestinian dates exempt from customs duties from 3 to 5 thousand tons.

In a post on his account on the “X” platform, he mentioned his meeting with the Palestinian Minister of Economy (former Khaled Asseily) in December 2023.

He added that he and Minister Asseily reached the necessity of raising the share of Palestinian dates exempt from customs duties, so that this would be announced today.

The Turkish minister expressed his hope that this step would bring goodness to the Palestinian economy, which he said was one of its basic elements.

Bolat affirmed that Turkey will continue to “meet the demands of the Palestinian brothers in various fields and by all means available to us.”

For its part, the Palestinian Ministry of National Economy quoted in a statement the Minister of Economy, Muhammad Al-Amour, as welcoming “the Turkish government’s decision.”

It added, “The Turkish decision comes in response to the Palestinian request regarding raising the quota of Palestinian dates exempt from customs and facilitating the entry of customs-free Palestinian agricultural products into Turkish markets.”

According to the statement, Al-Amour expressed, in a telephone call with Bolat, “his thanks and appreciation to Turkey as president, government and people for this decision that strengthens the steadfastness of Palestinian farmers in particular, and for all aspects of the continuing support that Turkey provides to the Palestinian people politically and economically and for the relief it provides to our people in the Gaza Strip.” .

In the 2023 season, date production in Palestine was estimated at about 18,000 tons, produced on 870 farms employing about 5,000 workers, according to statements by former Minister of Agriculture Riyad Al-Attar in September 2023, reported by official Palestinian news at the time.

According to Al-Attari, the revenues of this sector exceed $100 million annually, noting that Palestinian dates will reach 60 markets internationally during 2022.

He revealed that last year, the United States ranked second among Turkey’s largest export markets after the trade volume between the two countries reached about 37-38 billion dollars.
