The Turkish authorities continue to evacuate their citizens from Sudan due to the battles between the army and the Rapid Support Forces that have been going on for more than a week.

A Turkish Airlines plane with 301 Turkish citizens on board landed at Istanbul Airport on Wednesday.

He explained that the plane took off from the airport in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa at night and arrived in Istanbul at 09:30 am local time.

Citizen Cem Harbilioglu said that he came to Ethiopia by land in coordination with the Turkish embassy in Khartoum, and that the evacuation process was somewhat difficult.

He added that he had been living in Sudan for 20 years and had to leave because of the war that suddenly broke out between the army and the Rapid Support Forces.

He expressed his happiness at his arrival in Istanbul and their reception by relatives and citizens.

Since April 15, a number of states in Sudan have witnessed large-scale clashes between the army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the Rapid Support Forces, led by Muhammad Hamdan Dagalo “Hemedti”, which claimed the lives of hundreds of people, dead and wounded, most of them civilians.

The Humanitarian Relief Foundation, Human Rights and Freedoms (İHH) announced the distribution of 11,215 copies of the Noble Qur’an on the African continent in 2022.

According to the authority’s statement on Sunday, the authority is supervising the provision of copies of the Holy Qur’an as gifts to Islamic countries in various parts of the world to meet their needs.

The commission distributed 3,500 copies in Nigeria, 2,500 in Mali, 2,184 in Burkina Faso, 1,000 copies in Chad, 600 in Guinea, 586 in Ethiopia, 500 in Benin and 345 in Sudan.

The total number of copies of the Qur’an distributed by the commission so far has reached 274,000 copies.

The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) and the Red Crescent Organization, in cooperation with the Ethiopian Maxbridge Endowment, supervised the training of Ethiopians to deal with natural disasters.

The representative of TIKA Agency in Ethiopia, Cengiz Bulat, pointed out the need to create awareness in the Ethiopian society to deal with natural disasters and reduce damages.

He explained that their activities focused on disseminating information related to natural disasters, training trainers, and ways to mitigate disaster damage.

The training lasted for 6 days and included 50 hours, at the end of which the participants received a certificate of completion of the course.

As for the director of educational projects at Tika, Mustafa Hisham Polat, he said in his speech at the ceremony of distributing certificates to the participants, “Information is not a source of power in our hands, but rather a source of responsibility, and this responsibility was manifested here through this session.

Ethiopian runner Sechelle Dallassa won the 44th Istanbul Marathon for the women’s category on Sunday, which is organized by the city’s municipality.

The Ethiopian runner ran a distance of 42 km and 195 meters in two hours, 25 minutes and 54 seconds.

And her compatriot Ethelimaho Sentaihu came in second, with a time of two hours, 31 minutes and 38 seconds.

The marathon started from the Asian side of the city at the July 15 Martyrs Bridge, after Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu gave the sign to start and end in the European part of the city.

The marathon includes 3 categories: 42 km, a 15 km half marathon, and an 8 km popular running race.

About 60,000 runners from several countries participated in the marathon, including 56 from the world’s elite class.

The marathon was organized for the first time in 1979 under the name “Eurasia Transcontinental Marathon” and was at that time for men, then the women’s category was added to it in 1991.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry has expressed its concern about the escalation of tension again in the Tigray region in northern Ethiopia.

In a statement on Tuesday, the Turkish Foreign Ministry called for an end to the violence and the declaration of a ceasefire as soon as possible.

She affirmed that Turkey will continue to support all endeavors to achieve stability and peace in Ethiopia.

She commended the role of the African Union in its efforts to hold direct meetings between the parties to the conflict.

The region is witnessing violent clashes between the federal forces and allied elements on the one hand, and the fighters of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front on the other.

On Monday, officials in Ethiopia’s rebel-held region of Tigray announced that they were ready to heed the African Union’s calls for an immediate cessation of hostilities.

On Sunday, the African Union called on the parties to the conflict in Tigray to “re-engage” in peace negotiations, while violence escalates in the besieged region.

These negotiations were scheduled to start in South Africa this October, but they were delayed “for logistical reasons,” according to the Associated Press.

Fighting resumed between Tigray forces and the federal forces last August, which led to the end of the ceasefire in force since last March.

Since November 4, 2021, clashes have been renewed in the Tigray region between the federal army and the “Tigai People’s Liberation Front” with the aim of imposing control over it.

Turkey welcomed the announcement by the Ethiopian Tigray People’s Liberation Front of its readiness to commit to an immediate ceasefire and to resolve the conflict peacefully in the north of the country.

This came in a statement issued by the spokesman for the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Tanju Bilgic, on Monday.

Bilgic made it clear that Turkey always calls for dialogue and expresses its readiness to provide all kinds of support in this context with the aim of ensuring a permanent end to violence in Ethiopia.

On Sunday, the Tigray Liberation Front announced in a statement its commitment to an immediate and agreed ceasefire, stressing that “the conflict can only be resolved through dialogue.”

The Front expressed its willingness to engage in a serious peace process under the auspices of the African Union.

The conflict in Tigray region, northern Ethiopia, began in November 2020, when Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed sent federal forces to the region to control the local authorities of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front after it was accused of attacking an army barracks.

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell on Tuesday praised Turkey and the United Nations for reaching an agreement to resume Ukrainian grain exports, saying that “thanks to Turkey, the first shipment of Ukrainian grain has arrived in Djibouti in the Horn of Africa.”

This came during a press conference held by Borrell in the Czech capital, Prague, after the informal meeting of the European Union Defense Ministers.

He added, “We are happy to see that the Black Sea Grain Agreement continues to operate. Congratulations once again to the United Nations and thanks to Turkey, the first shipment arrived in Djibouti today.”

He stressed that the Horn of Africa “is in dire need” of grain from Ukraine.

Borrell promised during the press conference that the European Union would continue to “monitor the implementation of the agreement.”

The UN-chartered vessel carrying more than 23,000 tons of Ukrainian grain arrived earlier today at the port of Djibouti, where the grain will be unloaded and transported overland to Ethiopia, one of five countries considered by the UN to be at risk of starvation.

This is the first humanitarian shipment to sail under the auspices of the World Food Program since the agreement on Ukraine’s grain exports was reached in Istanbul last month.

On July 22, Turkey, Russia, Ukraine and the United Nations signed the “Document on the Safe Shipping Initiative for Grain and Foodstuffs from Ukrainian Ports” during a meeting hosted by Istanbul.

The agreement guarantees securing exports of grain stuck in the Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea (Eastern Europe) to the world.
