Turkish Parliament Speaker Mustafa Şentop signed a memorandum of cooperation with his Cuban counterpart, Esteban Lazo Hernandez, on Tuesday.

This came during their meeting in the Turkish capital, Ankara, as part of an official visit by Hernandez to it.

In statements he made during the meeting, Şentop praised the existing relations between Turkey and Cuba, whether at the level of the two countries or the two peoples.

He pointed to Turkey’s support for the draft resolution that Cuba submits annually to the United Nations General Assembly in order to lift the US sanctions against it, describing these sanctions as “unfair.”

In turn, Hernandez said that the history of relations between the two countries extends back to 70 years ago.

He added that Turkey and Cuba have cooperative relations in various fields.

Cuban President Miguel Mario Diaz-Canel Bermudez on Sunday praised the growing economic and trade relations between his country and Turkey.

This came during a meeting with representatives of the Turkish business world in Istanbul, according to a statement published by the Foreign Economic Relations Council in Turkey.

In its statement, the Council indicated that the meeting was attended by prominent Cuban officials, and discussed opportunities for sectoral cooperation between Turkey and Cuba.

Bermudez said, according to the statement, that his government would like to see more Turkish companies operating in Cuba through new investments.

He added, “Many Turkish companies are currently operating in various sectors in Cuba, but we want to increase their number during the coming period.”

He pointed out the existence of joint projects between the two countries in several fields such as iron, metals and medical supplies, as well as cooperation in the field of energy.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan presented his Cuban counterpart, Miguel Mario Diaz-Canel Bermúdez, with a letter sent by Cuban President Thomas Estrada Palma in 1902 to the Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamid II.

Erdogan also presented his Cuban counterpart with the reply letter that the Ottoman Empire sent to Cuba at that time.

The Palma letter affirms “the intention of the Republic of Cuba to maintain friendly relations with the Ottoman Empire.”

For his part, Bermudez expressed his thanks to President Erdogan for the valuable gift and indicated that he had not seen this document before, saying: “It is a completely historical document.”

In the message that Palma sent to the Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamid II, it read: “I have the honor to inform Your Excellency that the territory occupied by the United States of America was evacuated and the Republic of Cuba was established at noon on May 20, 1902, and that I assumed the executive power conferred on me by the Cuban Constitution.”

And she added: “I declare in the name of the Cuban people the steadfast determination of the Republic of Cuba to maintain sincere and friendly relations with all societies, especially with the Ottoman Empire.

As stated in the response letter from the Ottoman Empire to Cuba: “Our noble, high-ranking, loving and glorious friend, the message of friendship was received and studied by you, which includes the formation of the Cuban government, your assumption of executive power, your desire to build friendship and your good intentions that will strengthen the friendship relations between the Ottoman Empire and Cuba that sends happiness, and it was written And send this message of friendship with the wish that your higher person will be a lasting success.”

On Wednesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan received his Cuban counterpart, Miguel Mario Diaz-Canel Bermudez, with an official ceremony at the Presidential Complex in Ankara.

President Erdogan received his Cuban guest at the main gate of the Presidential Complex.

After the national anthems of the two countries were played and the guard of honor was paraded, Erdogan and his guest took memorial photos in front of the Turkish and Cuban flags.

The two presidents moved to hold a bilateral meeting, which will be followed by a meeting at the delegation level.

Later, the two presidents will participate in the signing ceremony of agreements between the two countries, and then hold a joint press conference.

It is expected that President Erdogan will hold a dinner in honor of his counterpart Bermudez.

Latin American countries offered condolences to Turkey for the victims of a mine explosion in Barten state, which killed 41 people.

Venezuela, El Salvador, Mexico, Bolivia, Paraguay, Chile, Colombia, Panama and Cuba have sent messages of condolence and solidarity with Turkey and the families of the victims.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro tweeted: “From Venezuela, we express our solidarity with the Turkish people and our friend, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, following the unfortunate tragedy that occurred as a result of a mine explosion in Barten, which unfortunately caused loss of life. I offer my condolences to the families of the victims.”

For her part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador, Alexandra Hill Tinoco, expressed her condolences through her Twitter account and wished a speedy recovery to all the injured.

In turn, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said on his Twitter account, “We offer our sincere condolences to the people and government of Turkey for the loss of life and injuries as a result of the mine explosion in Barten.”

The Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed, through its Twitter account, the condolences of the Mexican people and their government and their solidarity with Turkey and the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic accident.

Similar messages of condolence and solidarity were also issued by the foreign ministries of Bolivia, Paraguay, Chile, Colombia and Panama.

And on Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that the death toll from the Barten mine explosion had risen to 41.

Energy Minister Fatih Donmez had announced that preliminary investigations showed that the explosion that occurred Friday was caused by a gas leak.
