Last year, Istanbul Airport ranked first among European airports in terms of the number of passengers, handling 23,409,132 passengers.

Following the outbreak of the Coronavirus and the closure of borders, as well as the travel ban last year, there has been a dangerous drop in the number of passengers at airports.

London Heathrow Airport and Charles de Gaulle in Paris, with 22.1 million passengers, are next on the Istanbul Airport.

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol ranked fourth with 20.9 million passengers, and Frankfurt Airport in Germany ranked fifth with 18.8 million passengers.

Istanbul Airport is the first airport in the world to obtain an “airport health accreditation” certificate from the International Airports Association because of its comprehensive measures to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus.

The Director General of Turkish Airlines, Bilal Ekşi, announced that despite all the difficulties in global aviation, Sabiha Gokcen International Airport is on the list of the 10 busiest airports in Europe.

As the Director General of Turkish Airlines, Ekşi, said, in a tweet, “We can succeed in difficult times.”

“Istanbul airport has overtaken Heathrow Airport in the United Kingdom. It has become the busiest airport in Europe. Sabiha Gokcen Airport was also in the list of the 10 busiest airports.”

Turkish Airlines has taken new measures to reduce the spread of the Corona virus in Turkey by suspending domestic flights within Turkey except for 14 states, which are:

• Ankara
• Samson
• Trabzon
• Erzurum
• Van
• Diar Baker
• Malatya
• Gaziantep
• Kayseri
• Konya
• Adana
• Antalya
• Izmir

The decision will be enforced from Saturday evening, March 28, according to a tweet posted by Bilal EKŞİ, general manager of Turkish Airlines, through his Twitter account.
