Algeria called for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council next Wednesday regarding the decision of the International Court of Justice regarding the ongoing Israeli war on the Gaza Strip since last October 7.

On January 26, the court and the highest judicial body in the United Nations ordered Israel to take measures to prevent acts of “genocide” against the Palestinians and improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza, but they did not order a ceasefire.

The official Algerian News Agency reported on Saturday evening that the Security Council meeting aims to “give compulsory action to the decision of the International Court of Justice regarding the temporary measures imposed on the Zionist occupation regarding its aggression against the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.”

She added that the Algerian mission to the United Nations “initiated extensive consultations to prepare for the Security Council meeting, where a small meeting was held at the mission’s (headquarters).

In addition to Algeria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, it included representatives of Palestine and South Africa (the applicant for the lawsuit against Israel in the court).”

Following this meeting, the representative of Algeria, Ammar Benjameh, participated in an emergency meeting of the Arab Group in New York to consider the practical steps needed to be taken following the court’s decision, according to the agency.

On the day the court’s decision was issued, based in The Hague, Netherlands, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune directed his country’s mission in New York to request a Security Council meeting.

Since the beginning of this January, Algeria has been a non-permanent member of the Council for a period of two years among ten non-permanent members, while there are five permanent member states that have veto power, namely the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia.

Since the outbreak of the war in Gaza, the United States has prevented the issuance of resolutions in the Council that it considers to be biased against its ally, Israel.

Washington also supports Tel Aviv’s position of rejecting a permanent ceasefire, claiming that it will allow the Hamas movement to rearrange its ranks.

As of Saturday, the Israeli war in Gaza had left “26,257 martyrs and 64,797 injured, most of them children and women,” according to the Palestinian authorities.

It also caused massive destruction and scarcity of food, water, and medicine, with the displacement of about two million Palestinians, meaning more than 85 percent of the Gaza Strip’s population, according to the United Nations.

This came in a speech during his meeting with his Algerian counterpart Ibrahim Bougali on the sidelines of the 17th Conference of the Union of Councils of Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Algiers.

Şentop praised the importance of the conference, which addresses the common problems of the Islamic world.

He explained that 400 million Muslims living in non-Islamic countries around the world are subjected to systematic or individual violations of human rights.

He pointed to the growing phenomenon of Islamophobia, xenophobia and racial discrimination in recent years, and that this phenomenon has become a policy adopted by some countries.

Şentop also met in Algeria with the Speaker of the Ivorian Parliament, Adama Bektogo, and discussed with him the existing bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to enhance them.

Şentop and Bektogo discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the two sides in the fields of energy, health and education.

He also met with the Chairman of the Shura Council in the Sultanate of Oman, Khalid bin Hilal Al-Ma’awali, and expressed his gratitude for the development of the two countries’ relations in recent years.

Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu announced that Turkish investments in Algeria have exceeded $5 billion and that the target value is $10 billion.

This came during a joint press conference he held on Saturday evening with his Algerian counterpart, Ramtane Lamamra, after the first meeting of the “Joint Turkish-Algerian Planning Group.”

Ministers Çavuşoğlu and Lamamra presided over the meeting held in Algiers, concerned with following up on the results of the high-level Turkish-Algerian Cooperation Council.

Çavuşoğlu said that the meeting dealt with the decisions taken at the high-level Turkish-Algerian Cooperation Council meeting held last May in the capital, Ankara.

He explained that the meeting discussed opportunities for cooperation in the fields of trade, agriculture, fishing, industry, energy, maritime and military cooperation, defense industries, culture and education.

He revealed that the value of bilateral trade between Turkey and Algeria increased by 30 percent this year compared to last year, and is expected to exceed $5 billion.

He stressed Turkey’s determination to take all necessary steps to reach the target value of $10 billion in bilateral trade.

He pointed out that the opening of a branch of the Turkish Agricultural Bank in Algeria will contribute to achieving this goal.

He stated that Algeria offers very important opportunities in the field of agriculture, and that cooperation between the two countries will benefit the whole region in light of the increasing importance of food security.

He pointed out that the number of Turkish companies operating in Algeria exceeded 1,400, and that the value of investments also exceeded $5 billion.

He indicated that the two countries are working together to raise the level of Turkish investments in Algeria to $10 billion, not just trade.

Çavuşoğlu touched on the energy crises in the world, stressing that cooperation between the two countries has different dimensions in this field, such as natural gas trade, mining and joint research activities.

He said that he discussed with Lamamra issues of transportation, maritime shipping, joint production of ships, and the necessary steps to enhance cooperation in the military field and defense industries.

He believed that raising the number of weekly flights between Turkey and Algeria to 55 at the beginning of this December would increase communication between their peoples.

Çavuşoğlu also announced the two countries’ intention to open two cultural centers in Algeria and Istanbul.

He expressed his thanks to the Algerian authorities for their strong support for Turkey in the fight against the “Fülen” terrorist organization.

He pointed to the similar positions of the two countries on the issue of Palestine, stressing Turkey’s support for the Algerian initiatives regarding reconciliation between the Palestinian parties.

He pointed out that there is a consensus between Turkey and Algeria regarding the establishment of permanent peace and stability in Libya.

Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Fatih Dönmez stressed that Turkey will emerge as a reliable partner and a safe path in the event that the natural resources of the Caspian Basin, the eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East are delivered to European markets.

This came in a speech during the second edition of the Algeria Investment Conference on Wednesday in Algiers.

“If the natural resources of the Caspian Basin, the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East are transferred to European markets in the near future, Turkey will emerge once again as a reliable partner and a safe route,” he said.

He added, “In this way, we will come a step closer to our goal of becoming a center for gas trade in our region, with additional gas entering our country from various sources.”

He pointed out that relations between Turkey and Algeria are developing with great momentum under the leadership of the two countries’ presidents, especially in the recent period, noting that the volume of trade between the two countries exceeded 4 billion dollars.

He stressed that they wish to start exploratory talks as soon as the preferential trade agreement between the two countries is dissolved, in order to cross this first threshold in the volume of our trade.

Dönmez stressed that Algeria is the country with the most Turkish investments in Africa, adding, “Currently, the number of companies with Turkish partnerships in Algeria is close to 1,500.”

Dönmez considered that the polypropylene production facility to be established in the Ceyhan region in the southern Turkish state of Adana, in partnership between the Algerian National Oil and Gas Company Sonatrach and Ronance Holding Company, is a pioneer in the investments that Algeria will implement in Turkey.

He expressed Turkey’s desire to intensify and increase mutual investments in the coming period between the two countries in areas such as energy, renewable energy, mining, banking, agriculture, food industry and health.

He stressed his country’s readiness for multilateral cooperation on the basis of mutual profit in order to increase investments.

Dönmez emphasized that Turkey occupies a very strategic position due to its geographical and geopolitical location and its proximity to gas-exporting countries and consumption points.

He explained, “The importance of Turkey’s location is no longer only we say, but the countries that demand gas, our neighbors and the gas-supplying countries express their intentions to implement the strategy of the gas center in Turkey as soon as possible, and we have a positive approach regarding this goal and we are working to achieve it.”

Dönmez stated that Turkey is continuing its efforts to become not only a region or a gas trading center, but also a distribution center.

And he added, “We currently have a stock exchange called “EPİAŞ” which manages the national energy market for electricity and natural gas and we will also use our existing technological infrastructure here to achieve the goal of our gas center. We hope by the end of this year we will define and announce our roadmap on this matter.”

He continued, “We are planning to organize a summit on natural gas in Istanbul from January to February next year and we will be very happy to participate in this summit with our Algerian friends who are one of the most important natural gas producers and exporter of liquefied natural gas.”

Dönmez recalled that the Turkish Oil Company discovered an important gas reserve of 540 billion cubic meters in the Black Sea during the last period.

He stressed, “We aim to deliver natural gas discovered in the Black Sea to our country’s gas system in 2023. This discovery is important not only for the security of supplies for Turkey, but for European and global markets as well.”

He stressed that the capabilities and opportunities of the Turkish Petroleum Company have developed significantly in the past five years.

Dönmez noted that the Turkish Petroleum Company is closely interested in cooperation and partnerships in Algeria.

Minister Dönmez indicated that Turkey has reached an important position not only in terms of the existing institutional capacity, but also in terms of the products and supplies needed to deploy renewable energy plants.

“I would like to confirm that we are ready to develop our cooperation with Algeria in all areas of renewable energy,” he explained.

He stressed, “We will continue to strengthen our economic, social and cultural ties in all friendly and brotherly geographical regions, foremost of which is Algeria, and we will continue our strong support to increase the number of companies doing business on a global scale.”

The Turkish Foreign Ministry criticized French President Emmanuel Macron’s statements against Turkey and some other countries during his visit to Algeria and called on him to confront France’s colonial past in Africa.

Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Tango Bilgic said in a statement on Saturday that Macron’s statements targeting our country along with some other countries during his visit to Algeria are very unfortunate.

He added, “It is unacceptable that President Macron, who is facing difficulties over his colonial past in Africa, especially Algeria, tries to get rid of his colonial past by accusing other countries, including ours.”

And he added, “Turkey, which encourages friendship and not hostility, is among the strategic partners of the African Union, and it develops its relations with Algeria and other African countries day after day.

He pointed out, “If France believes that there are reactions against it on the African continent, then it must search for its source in its colonial past and its efforts to continue it in different ways, and it must correct this.”

He continued, “The claim that these reactions are the result of the activities of third countries rather than confronting and solving the problems of their past is not only a denial of a social and historical phenomenon, but also reflects the distorted mentality of some politicians.”

“We hope that France will reach maturity to confront its colonial past without blaming other countries, including ours, as soon as possible,” he said.

Macron claimed in statements during his visit to Algeria on Friday that his country is being subjected to a “smear” campaign led by Turkish, Chinese and Russian networks because of its abandonment of the scene in Africa.
