Merkel mentioned the presence of 3.7 million Syrians in Turkey, asking the Commission to submit concrete proposals in order to continue financing the agreement with Turkey on migration.
“It is clear that migration problems can only be solved with Turkey and through dialogue,” Merkel said.
She stressed the need to discuss with Turkey the issues of modernizing the customs union agreement, health, environment, and combating terrorism.
She stressed the need to achieve progress in terms of strategic cooperation with Turkey, despite the different views on the issues of “the rule of law” and “fundamental rights.”
