Other Turkish cities follow a similar pattern, except that they may have cooler winters or warmer summers.

Turkish people’s culture and customs

The Turkish people are very hospitable and patriotic people, and the Turkish flag is a sacred symbol of the people of this country.

Turkey is an almost religiously unified country, with 99.8 percent of its population being Muslim, 75 to 85 percent of Turkish Muslims being Sunni and 15 to 20 percent Alevi, and other religions in this country are a minority.

The most important demographic difference for the Turkish people is the language.

Turkey consists of the majority of the Turkish and Kurdish-speaking regions in the southeast of the country, on the borders with Iraq and Syria.

About 70% to 75% of the population of Turkey speak Turkish and 18% speak Kurdish.

The Kurdish regions in Turkey are generally considered disadvantaged provinces and have not developed like other provinces in Turkey due to their minority status.

A very good culture among Turkish people is respect for animal rights and animal welfare.

Almost all tourists who have traveled to Turkey note the Turkish people’s love and respect for animals.

Feeding and sheltering animals is a common practice among the Turkish people, and animal abuse is reprehensible.

Because of this culture, the municipalities of large cities treat animals very well and, in addition to protecting and numbering the animals, they also vaccinate them.

Respect for the elderly and other popular cultures of the Turkish people can be mentioned.

Kissing the hand of an elderly person is common in this country and is considered a sign of respect.

People usually use the titles (Abla/Abi), meaning older sister and older brother, even when they are completely strangers to each other.

It is very common in Turkish culture to use these two titles to address strangers regardless of age.

The culture of marriage in this country is similar to the culture of marriage in Arab countries.

There are slight differences in some customs and one of these differences is that a woman uses her husband’s surname after marriage.

In terms of surname, there were no surnames in this country until 1934.

After 1934, when it became mandatory to have a surname in this country, people began to use the surname of the father, so that the family letters have the word Oglu (meaning son) (like Ahmetoglu meaning son of Ahmed).

In 2013, statistics were published about the most common family name in Turkey, which was presented (Yilmaz) as the most common family name in Turkey.

The way of life and food of the Turkish people

The way of life and food of the Turkish people in the eastern regions depends on meat and foods rich in spices, and the further we go to the west in this country, the less vegetarian food and the use of spices.

Breakfast is a very important meal for Turkish people.

The three-meal diet includes breakfast, lunch and dinner, but in some residents the diet consists of only two meals, and lunch is omitted because of the preferred breakfast, and is replaced by fruits and snacks.

Among the famous dishes in this country, the most popular types of soup are among the Turkish people. Turks eat different types of soup almost before every meal and even before breakfast, and the type of these soups varies according to each season of the year.

Among the drinks, tea is very popular among the people in this country, and the people of Turkey drink a lot of tea and like to pour the tea into small cups and drink it sweet by dissolving the sugar inside.

Urban life in Turkey

The services that city dwellers receive in urban life can be an accurate description of urban life in any other country.

Most Turks have access to services such as water, electricity, telephone and even gas, which we will try to explain briefly below.

Domestic gas pipelines in Turkish cities

As you know, Turkey does not have large sources of gas and fossil fuels, and imports most of its gas from neighboring countries such as Iran, Iraq and Russia.

Therefore, the price for Turks to obtain natural gas may not be as cheap and easy as it is in some countries.

Natural gas pipelines cover nearly 78 of Turkey’s 81 provinces.

In fact, gas in Turkey is mostly used to generate electricity in power plants.

Domestic use of natural gas in Turkey often involves cooking and is not usually used for home heating.

To heat homes in Turkey, different methods are used with coal, piped gas, capsule gas, diesel, electricity or even firewood, and they can be seen in major cities in Turkey.

In areas where there are no gas mains or homes that are not connected to the city’s gas system, people buy gas cylinders for home use.

These gas cylinders can be purchased at supermarkets and other stores and can even be delivered to your door within an hour by calling a company.

The cost of refilling these capsules is about 85 TL.

Electricity system in Turkey

Electricity is also an expensive energy in Turkey.

As mentioned, electricity production in this country is mostly done by imported gas, which is why electricity production requires a lot of money.

For this reason, the price of electricity in Turkey is a bit high.

Most domestic and commercial energy consumption is for electricity, and in homes, heating water and heating appliances have a higher priority.

Turkey’s water system

City water quality in most cities of Turkey, including Istanbul, is suitable for washing only, and for cooking and drinking you have to buy drinking water from shops.

In fact, this is a common system in many European countries, and the municipal water supply system is used for washing only.

This system reduces water treatment costs and prevents wastage of drinking water for washing and cleaning.

Tax and investment system in Turkey

Residents of Turkey will be eligible to pay taxes if they reside in the country for more than 6 months in a year.

Of course, if you are in the country temporarily for more than 6 months, you can be exempted from possible taxes.

Also, all people who own real estate in Turkey will be taxed and whether they reside or not, it will have no effect on tax laws.

Turkish income tax is levied on employment or on the amount of rent received and profits from investment, and it does not matter the source of the profit.

The most important taxes in Turkey include the following:

  • Income tax: up to 35%
  • Investment tax: 35% max
  • Property tax: 4%

Investing in Turkey can bring advantages such as obtaining permanent residence and a citizenship, and one of its disadvantages is the relatively high tax rate in this country.

Turkish public transport system

In Turkey, daily use of private cars is considered uneconomical due to the high cost of fuel.

And this is why the use of the public transportation system is very common in Turkish cities.

In this section, we intend to compare the public transportation systems of different cities in Turkey.

Subway

The use of facilities such as the subway can only be seen in major cities such as Istanbul (with 9 lines and 73 metro stations), Ankara (with 4 lines and 45 metro stations), Izmir (1 line and 17 metro stations)

And for example a large city like Antalya, No, it doesn’t have an active subway line so far.

Buses and taxis

Buses and taxis are one of the public transportation vehicles available in all Turkish cities.

Traveling by taxi in Turkey is very expensive, which is why many people try to use other facilities available such as city buses.

The high cost of taxis, which is often calculated using a taxi meter, is due to the high price of fuel in this country.

Dolmos (Minibus)

It is actually a special name for Minibuses.

The use of these generic vehicles is very popular in Turkey due to its abundance and reasonable price.

Public boats

Public boats are common in coastal cities in Turkey such as Istanbul or Izmir.

Unfortunately, the major Turkish cities suffer from congestion, and with these boats, you can bypass the city traffic.

Tram

Trams in Turkey are not a means that can be seen in all cities.

Trams can only be seen in cities with high tourist attractions.

Turkish education system

The education system in Turkish schools is 4-4-4.

The student enters primary school at the age of 6 or ilk Öğretim, after primary school he studies from the age of 10 to 14 in middle school and at the age of 14 he enters secondary school.

Education in Turkish schools ends at the age of 18 with a diploma.

Preschool is not mandatory in Turkey but it is recommended.

Turkish schools are divided into public and private.

The Turkish academic year begins in September and ends in June.

Turkish school holidays include 3 months of summer holidays and public holidays.

There are several secondary schools in Turkey, including:

  • Anatolian high schools with more foreign language courses.
  • Imam Khatib High School, and its courses in the field of religion and the Arabic language.
  • Secondary science schools that focus on science courses.
  • Technical and vocational high schools that focus on training certain professions.
  • Industrial, vocational and private secondary schools that are active in all the fields mentioned above.

After the fourth year of high school, students take a final exam and must pass a test to enter university.

Turkish higher education system and universities

Turkey’s higher education system, or Yüksek eğitim, includes both public and private universities.

Students must have a diploma to enter universities and obtain an acceptable score on the national university examination.

Turkish universities are very popular among foreign students, due to the high quality of education and affordable cost.

Turkish universities also have an acceptable international ranking.

Turkey’s health care system

Turkey has grown significantly in the health sector over the past decade, with around $120 billion invested in the Turkish health sector.

The status of the health care system in Turkey has changed compared to the past, and the most important sign of this is the low costs of medical services in this country.

41% of the medical and health expenses of the Turkish people are covered by taxes, 31% by insurance companies and people pay an average of 28% of the value of these expenses.

In Turkey, thanks to the General Health Insurance System (GSS), health services are provided to all citizens, and thus many medical and care costs are covered by the government.

The government has opened a special account to cover these expenses on various taxes, including automobile taxes.

The approach to healthcare delivery is similar to the American one, where the doctor initially has the authority to prescribe any drug to the patient, but from the third drug onwards, more money is charged to the person receiving the drug.

Foreigners can also obtain citizenship by buying a house in Turkey, and they and their families can enjoy the benefits of the health system for life in Turkey.

Cost of living in Turkey

Turkey is a developed country, but due to the depreciation of the lira against the dollar, the living and entertainment expenses are very suitable for foreigners compared to other European countries.

In general, you can enjoy a good life in Turkey with 6000 liras per month.

Renting a house in Turkey

The cost of housing in Turkey varies according to the city in which you live, for example, the cost of renting a house in Istanbul starts from approximately 1000 lira.

Of course, renting a house in each city of Turkey has its own forms. In some cities, rent for one year may be collected. In some cities, payment is made every two or three months, and in some it is paid on a monthly basis.

In general, the cost of renting in Turkey starts from 600 liras per month and fluctuates up to 2500 liras per month.

Turkish American flag

The dispute over Pompeo’s visit to Istanbul is considered a negative message in Turkish-American relations, and Erdogan’s team has taken a clear stand against Pompeo, confident of Trump’s defeat.

According to several Turkish and international news agencies, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made the decision to travel to Turkey and meet with officials in Erdogan’s government, which was met with a sharp reaction from Ankara.

Pompeo, who a few days earlier, despite his main duties, was involved in domestic politics and firmly declared that Trump would be president of the United States of America again, treating Turkey in a way the diplomatic apparatus had not anticipated.

Parallel to sending negative messages between the diplomatic services in the Erdogan and Trump administrations, Biden’s team took the first steps to contact Ankara.

Pompeo and Çavuşoğlu

I won’t come, you come …

The margins of Pompeo’s decision to travel to Turkey once again demonstrate the fact that, as the US Secretary of State, he has special attitudes toward the Erdogan government.

It is said that even when Pompeo worked for the CIA, he had a negative attitude towards Turkey.

But his desire to travel to a NATO member state without meeting government officials seems strange and even offensive.

The story goes that Pompeo announced that he would travel to Istanbul to meet the bishop of the church, but he did not intend to meet with Turkish government officials.

Kubra Bar, a journalist close to the AKP, said Pompeo’s arrogant behavior angered Ankara, according to information she got from a presidential official.

Pompeo, who had already said he would not meet with the government, sent a letter via an unofficial channel to his Turkish counterpart, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, to come to Istanbul for the meeting.

But Çavuşoğlu responded. I do not do that. Come to Ankara if you want to visit.

Instead of asking the Turkish Presidential Palace in Ankara to meet Erdogan through official channels and protocols, Pompeo informed via the same channel that he might also meet the president in Istanbul!

The latest message angered Turkey and informed Pompeo that the Turkish presidency is hesitant to meet. They also complained about why Pompeo traveled to Cyprus two weeks ago, but he did not visit Ankara.

Of course, the issue and the dispute is not only related to the place of meeting between these two cities, as in the meetings of Turkish officials with foreign diplomats, there is no prejudice and insistence on a special protocol on Ankara and Istanbul.

Several official meetings have already been held in Istanbul and even in Antalya.

What is important for Turkey is the response to the arrogant actions of the US Secretary of State. At the same time, it is important to note that Ankara has realized that it will have little to do with Pompeo and Trump.

Therefore, it should be said that the dispute over Pompeo’s visit to Istanbul is a negative message in relations between Turkey and the United States, and Erdogan’s team has taken a clear stand against Pompeo, confident of the defeat of Trump.

Biden’s initial signals to Ankara

Turkish media reported that US President-elect Joe Biden’s team has taken steps to hold initial contacts and talks with Ankara officials, and that Turkey is one of the countries included in Biden’s initial contacts list.

5 days ago, initial messages were sent by Michael Carpenter. This is the same person who was Biden’s vice president for foreign policy during the presidency of Obama and his first vice president Biden.

“We are not seeking to put Turkey in the corner and create problems for it through economic pressure and sanctions,” a republican said in a report.

We do not agree with Macron’s statements on Turkish sanctions. It is important for us that Turkey respects free market rules towards the United States and Europe and adheres to customs rules. As soon as Turkey realizes that it stands with us on one front, it will reconsider some of its behaviors.

It is now reported that the Biden team made initial contacts with the Turkish diplomatic apparatus, and it is clear that Joe Biden will not wait until Trump to get out of the white house to start working in the field of diplomacy.

Were Erdogan’s soft words because of Biden?

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan congratulated, albeit late, US President-elect Joe Biden, and at the same time praised Donald Trump’s efforts to strengthen the Turkish-American relations! At the same time. However, he spoke about issues that appear promising for some positive domestic measures.

Analysts close to the Turkish Justice and Development Party believe that Erdogan’s declaration of his desire to move forward in three areas of political, legal and economic reform has nothing to do with the outside world.

On the other hand, critics believe that the issue is not just internal pressure, and that Erdogan seeks to paint a good picture after Biden.

Open files in the Turkish-American Relations

The wave of change arrived at the last minute of the Trump administration in Syria, as longtime ambassador and envoy James Jeffrey has resigned. as one of the main issues the Erdogan administration focused on was the Biden administration’s foreign policy. What will happen to the Syrian issue?

Will Biden, like Donald Trump and Barack Obama, work with satellites for the PKK and Kurdish militias in northern Syria? So, this is one of the open issues between Ankara and Washington.

The second case is the issue of the S400 missile system and the Turkish-Russian relations, due to the failure to transfer the F-35 fighters to Turkey, and by the way, the Democratic faction in the US Congress played a prominent role in this paramilitary embargo.

The other major challenge between Turkey and the United States is Ankara’s expectations of the US judiciary to deal with the leader of the failed 2016 coup, Fethullah Gülen, who resides in Pennsylvania.

But Biden, a Democrat who has always believed in the principle of separation of powers and preserving the independence of the judiciary, is unlikely to pressure Gülen, given that Donald Trump did not communicate with prosecutors and take action against Gülen.

The three cases mentioned are just some of the main differences between Turkey and the United States, as well as the status of Turkey’s actions in the eastern Mediterranean, Turkey’s approach to Cyprus and Greece, and Turkey’s relations with NATO.

Other issues will also be examined between the Erdogan and Biden administrations, as it is unlikely to see a slump in Turkish-American relations.

Referring to the country’s readiness to resolve bilateral disputes with Greece on the basis of bilateral talks, Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Aksoy said: “Of course, Turkey and Turkish Cyprus will take steps to win their rights and interests.”

According to Turkish news agencies, Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Aksoy said, in response to Greece, which criticized the new announcement of the new Turkish ship Nautex in the Mediterranean waters, that Turkey is carrying out its regional activities in accordance with international law.

“Greece, which has again made baseless allegations in this regard, has again made its exaggerated claims, and has staged vain protests against Ankara after Turkey announced Nautex.

Referring to Turkey’s willingness to resolve differences between the two sides on the basis of bilateral talks, Aksoy said: “Of course, our country and the Turkish Cypriots will take measures to win their rights and interests.”

The spokesman for the Turkish Foreign Ministry added that Greece should avoid taking steps that would increase tensions, rather than making baseless allegations and complaining to third parties as usual.

To resolve the bilateral disputes in addition to the issues of the Eastern Mediterranean, we call on Greece once again to negotiate without preconditions.

The Izmir earthquake with the magnitude of 6.6 that hit off the coast of Seferihisar district in Izmir, caused great damage to the historic castle in Foca, which dates back to the Ottoman era.

The arched structures of the outer fortress on the side facing Karaburun were destroyed.

It was revealed that the external historical castle in the Foca region was also damaged by the earthquake that occurred in Izmir on October 30 and caused a lot of damage.

Fishermen and crews of tour boats have noticed the damage to the castle, known as Senevis Castle, Desh Castle, and Sedet Cali (Yeni Kali), in the military district southwest of Foca.

It was sad that in 1698, the ruins of the castle, which was an Ottoman structure built for military purposes, were destroyed by magnificent arches and remained for centuries.

Among the must-see historical places in Foca, the castle, which also contains the remains of a bath, was restored, and the damage caused by the earthquake disturbed the people of Foca and tourism professionals.

The central bank’s announcement of its decision on the interest rate on the Turkish lira came against expectations, as the Turkish central bank left the interest rate at 10.25 percent.

“It was decided to increase flexibility in managing liquidity and to continue liquidity measures until a significant improvement in inflation expectations is achieved,” the central statement said.

Despite expectations of an increase in the interest rate, the central bank left the interest rate at 10.25 percent.

Expectations of an interest rate increase ranged between one and three points, while the average estimate was 1.75 points.

The central bank raised the delayed liquidity window rate from 13.25 percent to 14.75 percent.

The Turkish central bank also raised the interest rate in its policy for the first time last month after September 2018 from 8.25 percent to 10.25 percent.

The recovery in economic activity continues

In the statement of the Monetary Policy Committee at the Central Bank, the following:

“In the global economy, with the normalization steps taken by the countries, uncertainty about the recovery in the third quarter was noted, and although there are signs of a partial recovery. The developed and developing countries maintain their expansionary monetary and fiscal position. The effects are closely monitored.”

The recovery in economic activity continues. With recent policy steps being taken, the trend of normalization in commercial and retail loans becomes more evident. With the gradual withdrawal of supportive policies implemented within the scope of epidemiological measures.

It appears that the expected balance in imports has started a strong recovery in commodity exports, and the relatively low levels of commodity prices and the real exchange rate will support the current account balance in the coming period.

As a result of the rapid recovery achieved in the economy along with the strong credit momentum and developments in the financial markets, inflation followed a higher than expected path.

With the steps taken in the scope of monetary policy and liquidity management to control inflation expectations and reduce risks to inflation expectations, significant tightening of financial conditions has been achieved.

Accordingly, the committee decided to increase flexibility in managing liquidity and maintain liquidity measures until a significant improvement in inflation expectations is achieved, while keeping the policy rate constant.

The cautious stance will continue

The committee believes that the resumption of the process of curbing inflation is of great importance due to the reduction of the country risk premium, the reduction of long-term interest rates, and the promotion of recovery in the economy.

The cautious monetary policy stance must be maintained in order for lower inflation to occur in line with the target path.

In this context, the monetary position will be determined in a way that ensures continued low inflation, taking into account the basic trend indicators.

The Turkish central bank will continue to use all the tools available to it for the purposes of price and financial stability.

It should be noted that any new data and news that will be announced may push the Board of Directors to change its policy stance in the future.

In a letter to his German counterpart Heiko Moss, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias called for Germany to suspend arms shipments to Turkey due to “provocative actions in the Eastern Mediterranean”.

According to the Greek news agency, quoting diplomatic sources, the letter specifically calls for stopping the export of submarines, frigates, planes and tanks to Turkey.

Greece blamed the repeated “provocations by Turkey” in the eastern Mediterranean on the gas disputes with Cyprus and Greece.

Greece accuses Turkey of pursuing illegal gas exploration on Greek islands

Germany tried very hard to mediate in the gas dispute, but to no avail.

The Greek foreign minister also wrote separate letters to his counterparts in Spain and Italy. He had earlier called on Europe to cancel the customs union with Turkey completely.

Monfried Weber, leader of the largest faction in the European Parliament (People’s Party), also supported imposing sanctions on Turkey in the gas dispute.

Relations between Greece and Turkey have been characterized by fluctuations in a number of issues, including the two countries’ areas of authority in the Mediterranean, northern and southern Cyprus.

It is worth noting that Turkey’s dispute with Greece and Southern Cyprus is rooted in their claims to exploit natural gas resources in the eastern Mediterranean.
